    • Where can I ride my ATV in Sawyer County this winter? Cathy LaReau This article came about on a snowy Sunday afternoon, and I wondered if our Alliance clubs were going to start grooming the snowmobile trails, closing them to UTV use. After discussions with our Alliance winter trail boss, Tim Davison, we decided to just alert riders that grooming may start suddenly- but right now, clubs are planning to ‘pan’ or prep the trail bases, which means UTVers can still use them. The Sawyer County Alliance will post grooming status updates on their Facebook page. You can ride everywhere in Sawyer County this winter that you could ride during the summer riding season with these few exceptions and notes: UTVs are not allowed on most trails once snowmobile grooming begins. This can change suddenly so be sure to call ahead before driving here to ride. ATVs, 900 lbs and under, are allowed on trails during winter, even during snow grooming. Tuscobia Trail is open to both ATVs and UTVs even during snowmobile grooming. Forest roads (not trails) normally approved for summer ATV use within the Chequamegon Forest, will be open to ATVs/UTVs even during snowmobile season. You cannot ride ‘snowmobile-only’ trails. You must stay on ATV trails as shown on our map. Flambeau River State Forest Trails (in SE section of Sawyer County)- these trails are closed to ATV use until May Forest Road 203/Trail 21 — This trail/route leading north from Moose Lake to Namekagon is closed to ATV use over winter Trail 31 north of the Tuscobia Trail near Birchwood — this trail is closed until Memorial Day weekend Our road routes are open all year to ATVs and UTVs. Our county roads (named with letters) are open for ATV use but this does NOT include county roads within the LCO Reservation unless they are specifically signed for use. In addition, local roads in most of our municipalities are open for ATV use. These roads will give good access to most lakes for further lake riding opportunities. Pick up our new 2025 Alliance map at most locations in Sawyer County. Also use the Trail Treker app for your best mapping solutions while riding in Sawyer County. Businesses have been creating new ATV attractions. Amanda Wilson from Deerfoot shared a new ATV event with me: “Gear up for an unforgettable UTV Showcase at Deerfoot Lodge on the Chippewa Flowge on Saturday, January 25th from 2PM-5PM! We’ve teamed up with Hayward Power Sports and Ravek Off-Road to bring you the ultimate UTV experience on the ice. Test your skills on our agility course, take on the UTV Tug-of-War challenge, and enter your ride in the “Best Accessories” Contest. But that’s not all! We’ll have demo machines available for test drives, bonfires to warm up by, music, exciting giveaways, and more! The fun continues with a Chippewa Flowage UTV Night Ride, departing from Deerfoot at 5PM. We’ll cruise by Shady Nook, Pat’s Landing, Chippewa Pines, and Big Musky, before returning to the Hoof. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to the UTV scene, come connect with fellow enthusiasts and show off your machine!” Chippewa Pines, located on Sandy Point Road on the Chippewa Flowage, is hosting an ATV event on Saturday January 18, beginning at 2 pm as well-more information can be found on their Facebook page. ATVers can ride roads to both events even if the trails are closed to UTVs due to snow grooming. Both Hayward Power Sports and Runamuck Rides are currently renting out both UTVs and snowmobiles for your winter vacation enjoyment. Come out and play!
