A co-worker and her husband went on a cruise a week or two ago, and in their travels met up with a guy who had been working for the Government, in a position he wouldn’t disclose, for the last 16 years collecting a paycheck, and hadn’t done shit! He told them it’s not everywhere, but it is in a lot of departments, no one checks on anything and the paychecks just keep coming. He said he gladly took the buyout and is close enough to retirement he probably won’t even look for another job, other than something local just to keep busy until he gets bored with it.
Now I have absolutely zero way of verifying this, but the impression my co-worker had was he didn’t give a shit, and there’s nothing anyone can do to him, short of the firing/buyout. He was totally fine with it, and knows others who feel the same.
Crazy, but I don’t doubt it for a minute.
